House of passage

A project for: Creating site-specific dance and performance works
House of passage - P. Kirkeby | Stephan Koplowitz | Andrea P-Ars Roccioletti

The place is located in a quite suburb of the city. Nearby there are many busy streets, and the garden that surrounds the architectural structure is like a green island. It is frequented by people who live in the surrounding area, as children and old people. The architectural structure is a work of Per Kirkeby. The municipality of Turin has promoted this work as part of a redevelopment project area.

Currently the work is not "lived" by the locals. Most of the people observed it by the stopped cars in traffic. At first my observation (I spent a lot of time here) the feeling of incompleteness of the structure acts as a contrast to the surrounding palaces: therefore I would like to create something on the sense of unfinished that this work shall, in relation to his being trapped in the city traffic.

While, in fact, the homes where we normally conduct our lives, are "concluded", but we continually fill with home furnishings, on the other hand we have this space incomplete, never satisfied, which creates tension between two opposite: that of living permanently, and that of being just passing through.

The action of the performance will take place within the architectural structure called "Opera for Turin" by Per Kirkeby (2005). The structure itself will be the central element in the performative. There are two perspectives of participation. The first, for the public placed in the area marked by the letter A. The second, thanks to a camera placed inside the structure (letter B): the audience can watch in streaming on mobile devices such as mobile phones, tablets, etc., what happens inside the structure itself.

The dual perspective of observation that interests me is the outside, front, very often but never lived daily with due attention to the work, while the inner one, thanks to the artifice of live video streaming, which allows you to see what happens "inside" of the frame as an additional "eye" on the "private" performance of dance.

This will emphasize on one hand the particular geometry of the structure, from a regular external point of view, but irregular inside, and therefore to live not only his appear frontally but also as a solid element with an internal volume, populated by the dancers.

The structure has the characteristic of looks like a building under construction. In fact, it is in its minimalism, and in its basic structures represent, that is all its power. Indeed, it seems like an unfinished house, with windows and doors, but neither doors nor without furniture other items of home. For this reason, well represents a place in the middle between the passage and the possibility to stand, between complete and incomplete.

The possibility to relate to the physical engagement of the performers stand outside or inside; crossing or staying in the spaces that connect the interior with the exterior, in performing actions within only partially visible from external.

In the case of a night performance, the lights already present in the pavement within allow play of light and shadows; may also be obscured with the bodies of the performers, not only for the audience who attends the performance outside of the structure, but also by those who follow the action on their mobile devices.

Not have been set up earlier performances in this location. The space has been awarded to Per Kirkeby as part of a redevelopment of abandoned and disadvantaged areas of the city.

The space is now a destination for people passing by the gardens, but is mainly observed by people standing in the traffic of the road. At the time of its construction was the subject of much criticism, especially on the part of citizens, and a structure may be too minimal and conceptual. Other art critics instead consider it an important work, perhaps too pretentious compared to expectations and understanding of the people living nearby.

The public can sit on the grass, and stakeholders will be involved to provide, where appropriate, the provision of mats and pillows to make the area more comfortable.

The viewing position of the public are indicated by the letter A in the previous photographs at the link marked. Moreover, with the aid of mobile devices, tablets, etc., may follow the action from the point of view of the interior of the structure, connecting to a streaming channel that will broadcast live for the duration of the performance, thanks to a camera placed inside the structure.

In this way, two will be the points of view of the performance to the audience: in front of it there will be the structure and performers who interact with it; in case of mobile devices, may also follow what happens inside of the structure, from a point of view that would not otherwise visible. The contrast between these two points of view serves to increase the content of meanings by the way of "being" in the building, or see the action only from the outside.

The area in front of the structure where the performance will take place can accommodate about two hundred people. Will be limited, especially in order to avoid that some people stay in areas not permitted by law and dangerous, such as the cars area, which is already partially closed to the public by a fence of metal. It is not expected to pay a ticket, also to prevent many, to follow the performance, occupy spaces not permitted by law.

Home of passage

The performers will dance within, across and outside the structure. It 'a site-specific work, focused on common use as a place just passing through, to make it a place of occurrence. Also, the second problem addressed will be to impermanence, and dwelling in a space not completely finished. The work of the dancers will also be structured in such a way as to emphasize the concept of private space and public space, understood as a private house as opposed to the public space of the street

From these considerations it is also due to the use of the camera placed inside the structure, which will allow the audience present not only to follow the performance from viewers outside of the structure, but also on mobile devices, to observe what happens to the interior of the structure.

The importance of this work aims to make the location a place of reflection for the audience of what is public and what is private, and therefore what is owned and what it is that is in common use; in addition, the structure of thin and minimal back to thoughts related to the concept of impermanence, and how much of our private homes is absolutely temporary and not permanent as we usually think. At this theme is also connected to the one of the homeless, who see in this artistic structure a chance to find shelter, although not quite hidden the formal architecture of the walls, as is the case for our homes.

The audience will be seated on the grass in front of the structure, and will observe the performance in front of him. Moreover, thanks to a camera in the building, will observe streaming to mobile devices what happens inside.

The performance will take a strictly narrative structure, with parts carried inside, near the openings and outside of the structure. It will be based on Propp's functions in such a way as to be readily noticeable and readable as a narrative, with a beginning of an individual who "lives" the structure, followed by the group of performers, and a series of actions that will take place before all 'inside and then the outside.

The performance will take place at night, and will also benefit especially the lights placed on the floor inside the structure. The bodies of the performers themselves will provide a barrier to light, so that it can darken and brighten again the inner sections of the structure. Will they start moving, and then vacate the light inside the structure, and therefore the structure will take shape and thickness due to the alternation and the appearance of human figures in motion.

The performers will be fifteen, so that they can comfortably use all the openings of the structure, and to offer screen lights placed on the pavement. There will be times when they are all present, and others in which only one of them will move inside and outside the structure. All the "dialogue" with the audience will be played on the contrast, as well as inside and outside the structure, including single performer element solitary and group of performers that follows the initiatives.

The clothes are very simple and neutral. Aside from the lights are already on the floor of the facility, will be used four lights to illuminate the facade of the architectural structure. Also, within the structure shall be placed a camera connected to the Net, to stream what happens inside the structure, which is not observable by the public except with the use of mobile devices such as mobile phones, tablets, etc.. The vision will be possible by connecting to a site that sends free images shot inside the structure. To the right and left of the public there will be speakers for the soundtrack. The soundtrack will be all based on noise "lonely", footsteps, sounds very simple, as opposed to sounds "in crowd", as well as the backing track. This will highlight the work of the two forces in the field embodied by the performers: that of the individual and that of the mass that follows it.
